The relationship between the survival of chlorella-infected flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and their ingestion of Chlorella sorokiniana cells was evaluated using a feeding bioassay. Chlorella-infected D. melanogaster showed a more significant reduction in survival compared to un-infected flies. Therefore, it is likely that nutritional stress is an important reason why infected flies succumb to the infection. To test whether this effect was observed in other insects, the survival of chlorella-infected larvae was also determined. Chlorella-infected Aedes aegypti L. larvae showed a significant reduction in survival compared to larvae that did not ingest chlorella. The effect of chlorella on the larvae was dose dependent. Chlorella-infected larvae survived longer than the uninfected larvae when the concentration of chlorella cells ingested by the larvae was low, whereas this difference was not significant when the chlorella concentration was high. Chlorella-infected larvae survived longer than the uninfected larvae when they were fed high protein diets. These data are discussed with regard to larval nutritional requirements.
